Metachoric Experiences

This type of real-as-real fantasy has been termed metachoric by psychologist and philosopher Celia Green.123 It is essentially, she says, a waking dream—one that can be entered into and left off with no obvious discontinuity and where the person’s surroundings appear as immediate and realistic as the normal, physical world. Green has examined numerous accounts of apparitional and otherwise uncanny experiences, including out-of-body travels and lucid dreams, and believes “a good many of them [are] completely hallucinatory.”124 In some cases, she notes, the person is observed carrying on a conversation or engaging in a routine activity, whereas that person perceives himself or herself to be doing something completely different. At such times, the individual is literally in a world of his or her own. Sometimes the discontinuity is marked (e.g., the person snapping out of it is somewhat shaken), but sometimes he or she slips into and out of the metachoric experience unaware, indeed, preferring the internal experience over the more mundane, everyday world. The experience is evidently akin to an absorbing motion picture, except the person is in the movie.125 Sometimes the movie is summoned consciously, but other times it runs spontaneously.126
